What we can do for you

ASC members come from all backgrounds. Current membership includes a teacher, a farmer, a hairdresser, an IT consultant and a salesman.

Whether you are shy and retiring or brash and up front, proficiency in public speaking can help you to achieve your goals. Do not let self-doubt and fear hold you back.

My First and Worst Speech
I stand here at the lectern my legs turned to jelly
And butterflies flutter and fly in my belly,
My hands are perspiring, my heart starts to pound
And I wish I could be swallowed up into the ground,
My cards are out of order, some fall on the floor,
I don't like my audience; I just stare at the door,
Time seems to stand still and my throat feels so dry,
So I gaze up at the ceiling and wish I could die,
From now fame and fortune will remain far out of reach,
I've made such a hash of my very first speech.

I'm back at the lectern with a confident smile,
My relaxed easy stance sticks out a mile,
My voice never falters it's as clear as a bell
And if I am nervous nobody can tell,
So just what is the miracle that has happened to me,
Well I am now a member of the York ASC.

Recovering Stammerers

Some club members are recovering stammerers, including our past president, Harry Scanlon. They are graduates of the McGuire Programme, which encourages students to further improve their speaking by joining a public speaking club.
