...to all the players who have helped us achieve our goal, especially Andrene for being a great captain. The whisper is that Georgina will be organising an appropriate celebration very soon.
Saturday 19th July vs BUBWITH Home
It was Bubwith who brought to an end our unbeaten run back in May. At that time, they'd won all their games too and were the runaway leaders. They gave us a solid 69-39 beating, but we did have 2 or 3 key players out that day...
Since then, we've picked up our skirts and got together another winning run. However, this was going to be a proper test of our mettle.
Even prior to the warm-up, you could tell Bubwith meant business. With not a skirt, nor a single pixel of pastel to be seen, bandanas were donned, knee supports carefully positioned, wrap-arounds secured and rackets were chosen from a selection according to musical tone.
I wonder just how many matches Bubwith ladies win before they've even hit a ball? No Sharapovas here - they're all Rafa followers. (I was even waiting for them to all charge, zig-zagging onto the Courts)
Anyway, their initial shock & awe got them off to a good start and Bish looked a bit shaky. Not for long though! Frances and Andrene edged it against their first pair 7-5. That first pair then failed to win, the whole morning.
The rest of the match went well. Fran & Andrene won 7-5 11-1 and 10-2. Jane & Helen P won 9-3 9-3 and 8-4 and Julia & Kathryn were unbeaten(!) with 6-6 7-5 and 6-6.
Unbeaten on the day - 7 rubbers won outright, and two drawn. Final score 73-35.... and top of the table!
The lesson of the day is that appearances can be deceptive. After all... we look as if butter wouldn't melt.... (no comment!)
Saturday 12th July vs ESCRICK Away
We were hopeful because we'd already won the Home fixture fairly convincingly, back in May and we also had a strong team out.
Jane and Helen P got a massive 29 games, only to be surpassed by Andrene and Frances with 33 games! It was a bit fortunate - in the final rubber, one of our opponents had to leave with the score at 7-1, so we got the final 4 games gratis.
So the scores were:
Jane and Helen 9-3 11-1 9-3
Andrene and Francis 11-1 11-1 11-1
Georgina and Helen 5-7 5-7 9-3
Bubwith coming up next. Hope we can be in as good a form for them!
Saturday 7th June vs TOLLERTON Home
The Ladies got back on the winning wagon yesterday. It was a really good match home to Tollerton
Jane and Helen P got 8 4 9 3 8 4 Andrene And Kathryn 7 5 5 7 9 3 Julia and Helen W 3 9 3 9 5 7
So we won 57-51. Nice to be back winning and it keeps us up there at the top. Well played all.
Saturday 10th May vs CAWOOD Home
"How many blummin' draws have we had against Cawood?" asked Captain Andrene the moment she finished the last rubber of the match.
Not sure exactly, Andrene, but however many - add one more to it.
Andrene and Francis 7;5 9;3 8;4
Jane and Helen P 9;3 5;7 9;3
Katherine and Helen W 2;10 0;12 5;7
Monday 28th April vs POPPLETON II Away
Monday night? What's THAT all about - we missed out on Coaching. Mind you - we didn't need any!
A good team performance all round as we won no less than 7 of the 9 rubbers. Fran & Andrene topped out with 27, Jane & Helen P got a very useful 23 against determined opposition and Jules et George got to make the tea with 13. And nice tea it was too.
A very enjoyable evening altogether (chorus: 'A very enjoyable evening')..... Well...it's always fun when you've won, isn't it?
Saturday 26th April vs ROWNTREE PARK Home
Rowntree Park, always a 'useful' Ladies team, are down from Division 2 this Season. They possibly thought, then, that lowly Division 3 was going to be a walk in the park. Well, their home matches might be, but this was away to a strong Bish team.
Fran and Andrene bit off the lion's share of the games, with 29. The scores didn't reflect the high standard of the games - except this time, it was to our advantage.... particularly one rubber where every game was close but our no.1 pair edged most of them to win 10-2.
Jane and Helen P rode shotgun to return a mighty useful 19 games. Helen Williams, playing her first match for Bish, partnering Kathryn, scored the vital games to get us over the finishing line first, with 11.
An excellent start to the Season, and a friendly team to sit and share lunch with. Well played all.
Next match, bizarrely is on MONDAY NIGHT away to Poppleton. Talk about fixture congestion!
