Match Report
Tuesday 6th May vs WIGGINTON Away
No Solti this week, through injury, so Sam took over as no.1 against a strong Wigginton side.
A special mention to Jonny Kay playing up from the U-14s. He won his singles (playing no.4) and also his doubles partnering Tom - to give us our two points.
....our only two points, in fact. We lost 2-4, but they were a good side.
Monday 28th April vs DUNNINGTON Home
The match kicked off late - at 4:45pm. This was a real worry for Solti, who had to leave for his next appointment by 6:40pm So, not EVEN two hours to play TWO WHOLE SETS of Tennis. Was it humanly possible?!?
Solti advised that he'd play the doubles set, but probably wouldn't have time to play his singles. Only a cynic would suggest that this was something to do with him being shoe-horned to play at no.1 for a change, instead of always at no.4...
So, Solti was 1, Sam 2, Matthew 3 and Tom 4. Solti and Sam's doubles against Matt Shepherd and Dan Hall kicked off first and was pretty see-saw. Close games, and some brilliant rallies until S&S scraped through 7-5.
In the singles, Tom had a lean time against Andrew Milne - although Tom did avoid the doughnut - losing 1-6. Matthew had been getting the better of Tim Lamb, leading 4-3, but the occasion got to Sharpey, and he let the last three games slip for a narrow 4-6 loss.
So, we were 1-2 down at the break. But if there's one thing Bish U-18s can do, it's win at doubles. Tom and Matthew veritably took their singles conquerors apart in the doubles, comfortably winning 6-2 to even the match up at 2-2.
Solti and Sam slogged away on adjacent Courts. Both still had enough energy to get into position early for every shot - so the rallies went on for an age. Solti still had his next appointment in mind, and fell 3-6 to Matt Shepherd - just the one break.
Sam was able to concentrate fully on his shots, despite Solti's continual demands to know the score. Although he had a slight wobble, he came home, the 6-4 winner, against Dunnington's no.2, Dan Hall (any relation to Dunnington Hall I wonder?)
The match ended as a draw 3-3, with Dunnington just edging it on goal difference 27-29.
Everyone enjoyed themselves, except perhaps Solti who was berated by his team-mates at the end for not concentrating on his game. The moral is, that in Tennis 'the match is there to be won' - but ONLY if you stay focussed on your game and NOT the score!
So, what time did it end? Well the first eager customer for Monday-night Coaching arrived at 5:50pm (yup - an hour too early) to find the match finished. It had taken a tad over an hour, Solti, to play two sets of Tennis with much prevarication and mucking about in the middle. OK?
