Match Reports 2012

May 22nd vs Wigginton III Home

As a match reporter (whose turn it was to stand down this week) what can I say apart from the team won with a fantastic score of 72-36 and Ellie and Jamie were top scorers this week (and I thought Jamie was supposed to have a bad back).

Lets hope this winning run continues!
Julia

May 15th vs Tollerton I Home

This week our match was against Tollerton and we had two welcome addtitions to our team in Andrene as Jane was playing up this week in Mixed 1 and Dave Moore who stepped in at the last minute due to Jamie having hurt his back.

With these stalwart additional players and regulars James P, Sam, Laura and Julia we clinched another win for Mixed 2 of 69-39.

James and Andrene were our top scorers this week, well done to them. It was a lovely sunny evening , perfect weather for tennis and then to end the evening off, not to the pub as one of the Tollerton players was so looking forward to, but a cup of tea and our sumptious supper in the clubhouse which was enjoyed by all.

May 8th vs Dunnington IV Away

We travelled to Dunnington with slight trepidation as this was the only team who we lost a match against last year.

We shouldn't have worried as all our three pairs played very well and we won 73-35.

Sam and Laura had their first match of the season together and were a solid pairing. I think we all had a test of our concentration with the noise that came from the adjoining football field, and with the addition of a football landing our court with James and myself, luckily they missed us.

After the match we were treated to a lovely supper in the Sports Centre, no sandwiches this time, but a fab spread of Jacket Potatoes, Chilli, Cheese and Salad.

May 1st vs Appleton Roebuck II Home

We had a great start to the season winning 70-38.

Each pair seemed to gel with their new partners for the season. These were Jane and James P, Ellie and Jamie, and myself with James F.

The two not playing this week were Sam and Laura but as we have 8 in the team we will all have to miss a couple of weeks or so.

The night was quite dark from the outset and we left Jane and James P in the dusk whilst we went to prepare the supper at Jane's house. This was due to the fact the clubhouse was out of bounds due to the floor just being screed ready for the new carpet.

Our opponents declined the offer of supper at Jane's and returned defeated to a Tennis meeting at Appleton Roebuck in the pub.

Match Reports 2011

August 2nd vs York VI Home

Yes we did it! X2 are champions of Division 7. Well done everyone.

Three years promotion on the trot is a real achievement.

I must get polishing the Div. 8 cup so we can swap it for the Div. 7 one at the Annual Presentation Evening.

Another solid team performance of 24/23/20 made a 67-41 win.

We had a late start due to torrential rain at 6.30, but started before 7, playing surrounded by mist from the fields spreading over the courts. A very ethereal and almost spooky effect, especially with blue sky overhead. Then of course it started to get dark. York were convinced we had laid on all these meteorological events just to put them off!

Well played York, we really enjoyed the tennis, some very hard fought rubbers and all in good spirit.

JP.

PS. I'm pleased to report that the courts were playable almost immediately the rain stopped.

July 26th vs Wheldrake Home

Last week's question centred on how other teams might be affected by the holiday season. Well I don't know about Wheldrake, but this week Bishopthorpe X2 were down by all 4 men:

Jamie: knee injury, only managed to play the very first fixture of the season
Alistair: wedding on saturday, followed by climbing Kilimanjaro and then honeymooning
Jason: on holiday in Slovenia
Jonny: camping in the lake district

Fortunately we were able to call on X3's very able stand-ins, James Field, David Moore & Dave Wright.
Very well played guys, a solid team performance, resulting in a win 74-34

JP & JF 31
DM & AW 23
DW & JS 20

Many thanks to X3, I hope you guys are not too tired to pull out a win this evening.

JP.

July 21st vs Wistow Away

DIVISION 6 HERE WE COME!!

Won 71-37

Milly & Jonny 29
Andrene & Dave Moore 19
Jane & James Field 23

We had a lovely evening - the sun came out, the wind dropped, and it felt like proper tennis weather. And proper tennis was played - every rubber contested well, in great spirit.

Thanks Wistow, and great chips too!

Well done everyone - this match against Wistow established that X2 will finish in the top 2 in division 7 this season, so guaranteeing promotion - for the third year running!

The only thing remaining to prove is whether we can get our hands on the silverware again by coming first instead of second.

That really depends on whether York and Wheldrake are hit hard by players on holiday - it's that time of year when you really can't predict whether teams you met earlier in the season will now be decimated by school holidays, or whether they will be strengthened by students returning home from Uni.

Watch this space to find out!
JP.

July 12th vs Fulford V Home

With Julia on her hols, and Milly at a staff meeting, we had to call on X3 for an extra lady, for the first time this season.

Helen Williams stepped up, partnering Al in his last game before his forthcoming nuptuals, and finished with a sound 19 games. Well done, and thanks Helen.

Jane and Jonny scored 10/11/8, totalling 29, and 14 more from Jason & Andrene took us well past the winning post with a total of 62.

Well played everyone, and all the very best to Al for his wedding on Saturday 23rd.

Next week it's away at Wistow on Thursday 21st, when half of X3's menfolk will be needed to keep us on track.

JP.

June 27th vs New Earswick Away

Bish Bobbydazzlers Bounce Back

A change of partnerships and a change of fortunes:

#1 Milly and Jonny (30)
#2 Jane and Jase (19)
#3 Julia and Dave W (12)

June 21st vs Dunnington IV Away

It had to happen, as sure as rain at Wimbledon.
X2 lost a match.

49-59, with some very hard fought, close rubbers. Good tennis.

Thanks for a lovely supper Dunnington, and very well played.

J&J 7-5; 8-4; 8-4
A&A 6-6; 6-6; 5-7
M&J 4-8; 2-10; 3-9

Cheer up Jason, it's only a game!
Just watch out for Bish bobbydazzlers bouncing back next week.

June 16th vs York VI Away

Will X2 reach the half way mark of the season with their unbeaten record intact??

Things were looking shaky, with Jamie out for the season with a knee injury awaiting surgery, then Jonny called up for X1 duty on the grass at Sutton on Derwent.

And the day of the match, Alistair cried off claiming work pressures.

With only ever-ready Jason left from the men in our original squad, two tried and tested subs, James Field & Craig Crossland were called on, and willingly agreed to help.

No worries, Jane & James got 10-7-10 (27), Milly & Jason 5-7-8 (20), and Craig & Julia 11-6-5 (22).

So, two rubbers narrowly lost out of 9, but a total of 69 games between us. Well played everyone, especially the subs, a brilliant job, thank you both.

It was a lovely evening, the black clouds that threatened briefly didn't get us wet, the courts were magnificent, and the spread at the Mitre was the only thing that beat us ... mountains of sandwiches, and piping hot chips, just what we needed!

Won 69-39

June 9th vs Wheldrake II Away

Away to Wheldrake (Now where is the bloody pub?)

With Skipper Jane taking a break to perform the duties of a doting Grandmother an X2 enthused with youthful vigour travelled to Wheldrake. At #1 it was Andrene and *the* Jonny Kay (who had just played a junior match), at #2 Milly & Jase continue their partnership and at #3 Julia had her (3 or 4th?) new partner as James Fields took his bow in X2 (also just out of a junior match). All this young blood must have filled us old gnarled X2 veterans with an elixir of life as we came out of the blocks like a steam train. A&J, M&J both notching 8s and J&J 9 to give us a round one total of 25-11. Nearly halfway there. Round #2. A&J carried on where they left off with a 10, M&J shared the spoils with 6 and J&J notched a 8. So after two rounds: 49-23 and Bish only 6 games away from win #19! Which duly claim with another clean sweep of the rubbers: A&J getting 8 for match total of 27, M&J back to winning ways with 7 and match total of 21 and J&J finishing with an 8 for a total of 25. So overall Bish ran out 73-35 winners and consolidate our position at the top of the table.

So it was off to the pub (or rather it was off to the wrong pub, down a dead end, finding Milly’s sat-nav didn’t know where pubs where, James running off into the wilds of North Yorkshire (to find a pub - good lad – M2 born and bred!) & a host of increasingly despairing phone calls to partners more well versed in the location of Wheldrake boozers) for a great spread of sandwiches with a really affable Wheldrake team who had played the match in great spirits and were just as good hosts!

Next up: York - Can X2 make it a nice 20 or will our winning streak remain like the average of a combat solider in ‘Nam?

You know where to come to find out!

May 31st vs Wistow I Home

May 24th vs Fulford V Away

Last week's fixture against Escrick didn't happen, as they have sadly had to withdraw from the league.

So we had a week off, and reconvened this week at Fulford.

The wind blew across the fields, strong and blustery, but conditions gradually improved as the evening went on, as the wind settled and the evening sunshine prevailed.

Jane & Jonny led the way with 9, 10, 10
Julia & Al were close behind with 7, 10, 8
Andrene & Jason provided strong support with 8, 3, 7.

All counted up, Bishopthorpe won 72-36. Jason, our stats man, reminded us that X2 is now on a run of 17 wins without defeat, since the start of 2010 season. Can even Djokovic beat that??

Lovely pie & chips in the Bay Horse afterwards - thank you Fulford.

May 10th vs New Earswick Home

A sunny day, leading to a heavy shower just before 6.30, fingers crossed it would pass. And it did, followed by the sun returning, leaving a beautiful rainbow arching across the courts.

Jane & Jonny, as #1 couple this week, came away with 30 games, with excellent back-up from Milly & Jason at #2 and Julia and Al at #3.

Bishopthorpe achieved a solid total of 67 games, against 41 to New Earswick.

Well done everyone, we had enjoyable tennis, a lovely tea and a very sociable end to the evening.
JP.

May 3rd vs Dunnington IV Home

We beat dunnington 4 79-29 - Jamie has offered to do the match report.

Still waiting...
