The City of York Hockey Club was founded in 1998 as a result of the merger of the two largest hockey clubs in the city of York, York Hockey Club and York Trojans Hockey Club.
With the realisation that York as a city did not have the resources to support two equally ambitious clubs, York and York Trojans decided to combine in a united effort to push one new club onto a bigger stage.
By combining the established structure and material resources of the York club, with the youth development policy and coaching skills of York Trojans, the City of York Hockey club was formed, with its base in Heworth, previously home to York Hockey Club. This ground, complete with two grass pitches, is shared with Heworth Cricket Club, who use the ground in the summer months, meaning a regular flow of people, members and visitors in equal measure, to the clubhouse.
The City of York Hockey Club is one of the largest hockey clubs in Yorkshire, and indeed, the north of England, in terms both of membership and the number of teams it regularly fields.
For the mens section eight teams play competitive hockey at various levels every Saturday, playing in the Yorkshire League, in various divisions. The first and second teams are an exception, playing in the Northern Counties League, in the Premier Division and Division 2 (East) respectively.
The ladies section comprises of four teams, the first playing in the North Premier League, 2nds/3rds/4ths playing in the Yorkshire League in divisions 2, 6 and 7 respectively.
There is a very active Youth section playing at all levels from under 10's to under 16's.
