THE DALE FAMILY IN YORK

William and Mary Dale

William Dale married Mary Stead on 29 December, 1844, at Saint Dennis, York.[1]
I have not yet traced when either of these two were born, nor whether they were related, however I have ordered a birth certificate for Alfred Dale, one of their sons, for confirmation .

From information in later census forms it looks as though William was born in about 1821, and Mary a year later in 1822.

William’s father was called William Dale, and Mary’s father was George Stead.[2] This information can only be confirmed after further investigation.

William and Mary had the following children:[3]

Mary Jane Dale, christened 10 March, 1848, St Dennis, Walmgate, York
James Dale, christened 3 October, 1852, St Dennis, Walmgate, York
Edward Dale, christened 2 December, 1855, St Dennis, Walmgate, York
Alfred Dale, christened 30 November, 1858, St Dennis, Walmgate, York
Frederick Dale, born 1861, York[4]
Thomas Dale, christened 26 January, 1863, St Dennis, Walmgate, York
Sarah Anne Dale, christened 25 June, 1866, St Dennis, Walmgate, York

In 1871 Census[5] William and Mary Dale and their family were living at 1 Hope Street, Walmgate, York.

William was 50 years old, a Printer Compositor. Mary was 49 years old.

The family were as follows:
James Dale, aged 18, an Ironmoulder
Edward Dale, aged 15, a Glassblower
Alfred Dale, aged 13, a Scholar
Frederick Dale, aged 10, a Scholar
Thomas Dale, aged 8, a Scholar
Sarah Anne Dale, aged 4, a Scholar

Mary Jane Dale, their daughter, was not living with them. She would have been 23 years old in 1871 and possibly married.

[Living at 1 Hope Street, Walmgate, York, was a George Dale, aged 45 years, a Whitesmith, born in Balkend, Thirsk. He was married to Elizabeth, aged 41 years, a Seamstress, born in York, Their family were William, aged 14, A Fitter, Joseph H, aged 10, a Scholar and Isabella C, aged 2. All the children were born in York. Are these Dales related in any way? Is it coincidental they live next door to each other? All may be revealed as investigations continue!]

In 1881 Census[6] William and Mary were living at 11 Duke of York Place, York.

William was by now 60 years old, still a Compositor Printer, and Mary was 59 years old.

The family were as follows:
Frederick Dale, aged 19, a Glass Blower
Thomas Dale, aged 17, a Scholar
Sarah Anne Dale, aged 15, a Comb Cutter

Mary Jane Dale, their daughter, and their sons James, Edward and Alfred were not living with them.

I have not traced William in the 1891[7] nor the 1901[8] Census.

What Happened to the Sons and Daughters of William and Mary Dale?

Mary Jane Dale, christened 10 March, 1848, St Dennis, Walmgate, York

No trace under this name in 1871, 1881, 1891 or 1901. A marriage, or death needs to be researched.

James Dale, christened 3 October, 1852, St Dennis, Walmgate, York

In 1871 living with parents at 1 Hope Street, Walmgate, York.

In the 1881 Census[9] James and his wife Elizabeth were living at 11 New Begin Street, York, with their 1 year old son, Arthur. James was 28 years old and an Iron Moulder. Elizabeth was 22.

I have not yet traced a marriage for James Dale and Elizabeth[10].

I have not yet traced a birth for Arthur Dale.

I have not traced James or Elizabeth in the 1891 nor the 1901 Census.

Edward Dale, christened 2 December, 1855, St Dennis, Walmgate, York

In 1871 living with parents at 1 Hope Street, Walmgate, York.

In the1891 Census[11] there is a record of an Edward Dale, aged 25, born in York, and a Glassmaker. He lived with his wife Bridget, aged 27, born in York, at 7 Hampsons Yard, Walmgate, York. They had two children, William, aged 3 and Elizabeth, aged 2.

This could be the Edward Dale I’ve been looking for. Further research required on when they got married.

I have not traced Edward in the 1881 nor the 1901 Census.

Alfred Dale, christened 30 November, 1858, St Dennis, Walmgate, York

In 1871 living with parents at 1 Hope Street, Walmgate, York.

In 1879 Alfred married Mary Jane Fell.[12] I have no other information at this stage but have requested Marriage Certificate. Alfred and Mary Jane are my great grand parents.

In 1881 their daughter, Frances Lily Dale was born in York

In the 1881 Census[13] Alfred and Mary Jane were living at 14 Willow Street, York, with their daughter Frances Lily, aged 3 months.

Alfred was 22 and a Glass Blower, Mary Jane was 23 years old and a Combmaker’s Labourer.

In about 1883, their daughter Mary J Dale was born in York.

In about 1886, their daughter Ada Dale was born in York.

In about 1889, their son Albert Dale was born in York.

In about 1890, their daughter, Florence Edith Dale, my grandmother, was born in York.

In about 1893, their son Arthur Dale was born in York.

In about 1898, their son George A Dale was born in York.

In the 1901 Census[14] Alfred and Mary Jane were living at 33 Duke of York Place, Long Close Lane, York, with their family. Alfred was 41 and his occupation was Glassmaker Bottles, Mary Jane was 42.

The family were:

Mary J Dale, aged 18, single, Chocolate Confectionery Maker
Ada Dale, aged 15, single, Chocolate Confectionery Maker
Albert Dale, aged 12
Florence Edith Dale, aged 10
Arthur Dale, aged 8
George A Dale, Aged 3

Frances Lily Dale, their other daughter, had by this time left home. She would have been aged about 20.

I have not traced Alfred, Mary Jane and family in the 1891 Census.

Frederick Dale, born 1861, York[15]

In 1871 living with parents at 1 Hope Street, Walmgate, York.

In 1881 living with parents at 11 Duke of York Place, Long Close Lane York.

I have not traced Frederick in the 1891 nor the 1901 Census.

Thomas Dale, christened 26 January, 1863, St Dennis, Walmgate, York

In 1871 living with parents at 1 Hope Street, Walmgate, York.

In 1881 living with parents at 11 Duke of York Place, Long Close Lane York.

I have not traced Thomas in the 1891 nor the 1901 Census.

Sarah Anne Dale, christened 25 June, 1866, St Dennis, Walmgate, York

In 1871 living with parents at 1 Hope Street, Walmgate, York.

In 1881 living with parents at 11 Duke of York Place, Long Close Lane York.

On 11 August, 1883, at St Laurence, York, Sarah Anne Dale married John Martindale.[16]

In the 1891 Census Sarah Anne was living with her husband John Martindale at 27 Duke of York Place, Long Close Lane, York, with their family.

Sarah Anne was 26 years old. There is a discrepancy in her place of birth – it is shown as Hutton Ambo.

John was 31 and a house painter.

Their children were:

Walter Martindale, aged 5, a Scholar
Florence, aged 3
Annie, aged ?

Their birthplaces were shown as Hutton Ambo. I cannot find reference to their births.

I have not traced Sarah Anne and John in the 1901 Census.
