Mama Fairtrade
 | Photo: Mama Fairtrade at Fairer World in Gillygate
York was honoured to play host to Mama Fairtrade. Patricia Mtangeli's neighbours have given her this nickname as she spreads the message of Fairtrade everywhere she goes.
Patricia is a tea farmer from the slopes of Mount Kenya and she sells to Ndima which supplies tea used in the Traidcraft range.
At a public meeting held at St. Michael Le Belfry church she explained powerfully the difference trading on Fairtrade terms can make to the lives of small scale farmers and their families.
She went on to visit the Fairer World shop in Gillygate. They have the widest range of Fair Trade products in York, with many Traidcraft lines, including of course, Ndima tea.

Oxfam launch food campaign

Grow at street level
Oxfam's Grow campaign was launched in York in June. Revellers from York's vibrant Carnival joined Oxfam campaigners for the Oxfam Grow picnic. Food justice issues were discussed at street level, quite literally, as the meal took place on a picnic blanket, spread out on York's bustling Parliament Street.
Grow is a campaign for justice on food issues. It addresses concerns about rising food prices, financial speculation on foodstuffs, land grabs and the impact of climate change. Find out more:

Launch of Fairtrade Yorkshire
 | Fanfare for Fairtrade Yorkshire
The campaign for a Fairtrade Yorkshire was launched in York this March. Over 2000 people attended our entertainment event in Parliament Street. Acts included the splendid Golden Rail brassband alongside Yorkulele and festival favourites, Samba York and York Capoeira.
Yorkshire is aiming to become England's first Fairtrade region. The launch in the capital city of York has got us off to a tremendous start. The county has a very strong identity and this recognition of its commitment to Fairtrade will give us yet another reason to be proud to be Yorkshire. We have great historical traditions but we are also outward looking and concerned about fairness for producers both here and across the world.

York Festival of Fairtrade 2011
 | photo credit: Valentina Zunino, Fairtrade Foundation
Many thanks to everyone who took part in and attended events at this year's festival. It was a great success with over 100 events, including activities in schools, on campus and many church celebrations. The annual Fair Trade Market ran for 3 days, creating quite a buzz in Parliament Street. Evening talks included a fascinating insight into Fairtrade honey and an outline of Oxfam's work with farmers in Uganda to help with adaptation to climate change.

New Fairtrade Councillor
 | photo: Linsay Cunningham-Cross at the Spurriergate Centre Cafe
York has a new Fairtrade Councillor. Linsay Cunningham-Cross, who represents the Skelton, Rawcliffe and Clifton Without ward on the City Council, has been elected to serve as the Council's representative on the York Fairtrade City steering group.
Linsay has been passionate about Fairtrade for many years & is keen to help the many York businesses that sell or use Fairtrade products. Linsay commented;
“I am delighted that I will be leading the Council’s commitment to Fairtrade both inside and outside the council chamber. Most people in York understand the importance of Fairtrade but we need to reach a situation where Fairtrade products are the norm rather than the exception. Fairtrade demonstrates our commitment to those in poorer countries who are working hard to make an honest living, just like we do: it’s not about charity, it’s about justice."
