The Dewey Family Tree
Doreen Dewey, my mother, was born in 1934 on Worksop Road, Sheffield. The only daughter of Ernest and Glenfinella Dewey (Hinchliffe) she lived on Worksop Road until the age of three when she then moved to Shirecliffe in Sheffield. Living here until she married my father, Walter Jenkinson at St Leonards Church, Norwood in Sheffield. They eventually settled in the Pitsmoor area of Sheffield where I went to school.
My mothers father, my grandfather, was Ernest Dewey, the second oldest of a family of 4 children born in Sheffield to Ernest John and Beatrice Ellen Dewey (Gledhall). Born 4 January 1904 his birth has never been officially registered. Which he found out when he tried to claim his pension when he retired.
Ernest John Dewey was christened on 21 July 1878 at Waterbeach, Cambridge, the son of George William and Annie Dewey (Curtis). Ernest John met an untimelty death at the age of 42 years in an accident in the steel works of Sheffield. Whilst at work for John Browns at large piece of metal, weighing some appx 8 tonnes fell on top of him from a height, literally crushing him to death. The death is registered at the inquest as a "freak accident". Beatrice Ellen was left alone to bring up a young family and never remarried. She died in 1953 in Sheffield and is buried in Burngreave Cemetary. George William Dewey is the son of James and Eliza Dewey (Norton). Living all of his life in a small hamlet named Waterbeach in Cambridgeshire he never moved out of the area. James his father was born in 1817, the son of William and Ellen Dewey (Markerham). James was born in Witchford in Cambridgeshire but eventually moved to Waterbeach. William Dewey was born in Cambridgeshire in 1791 and married Ellen Markerham, also born 1791. William was the son of George and Mary Dewey (Long). George was born in 1796 in Witcham, Cambridgeshire. I do have more in-depth information on this family so please get in touch if you would like to know more.
