Institute Club

The Old Miner's Institute.

The above pictures are of the original New Marske Institute building.
The original building was replaced by our present one on the same site in 1966.

There are stones from the original building in the wall looking onto the carpark.
They give the original name as "New Marske Institute" and the date of 1875.
That is the same year that St Thomas' church across the road was built.
Lord Zetland paid for the church.
The Pease family who owned the iron stone mine and built the village paid for the Institute.
The Pease family were Quakers and imposed a strict temperance policy on the village.

The Pease family also imposed a no swearing rule in New Marske.
There was a swear box in the Institute for those who blasphemed to pay their penance into.
Today's Management Committee could look at this idea as a source of fundraising.

The Institute was for the education and recreation of the mine workers.
Reading classes were held, there was a library and talks by visiting speakers.

The maintenance and repair of the Institute was paid for by deductions from the mine workers pay.
A pay slip dated the 26th October 1889 shows a deduction of two pence for the Institute.

The ironstone mine closed in 1923.
New Marske was then free from the temperance influences of the Pease family.
The Institute was then running it's own affairs.

In 1925 twenty-five members put up £1 each to enable the Institute to get a licence to sell alcohol.

Some of the above is from the book by the late Ena Holloway, "New Marske Looking back", pages 14, 15, 16, 20 and 61.

'Sandy'Sanderson ,Jack Lamb,Elsie Helm (nee Lamb),Jack Helm.

Sandy Sanderson was well known for shouting 'We Are The People'anyone remember him?

Memories of Sandy by Neil Grimwood.

Sandy was well known to everyone, especially us kids at Sunday School in the Methodist Chapel. He used to come in every Sunday without fail and he always had his mouth organ with him,it was a case of suck and blow because he couldn't play any tunes.
If it was winter he would stand around the pot bellied stove rubbing his hands, and no matter what time of year it was he would always wish Mr.Woods a 'Happy New Year'.

His catchphrase was "We Are The People" he would always shout this as he left playing his mouth organ.

Happy memories of a village character.

Club Jubilee 1925

In 1925 the village celebrated the Jubilee of the Institute Club 1875 - 1925.

Below is an article from a book on St.Thomas' Church.

Telling that weeks story of the celebrations.

JUBILEE REJOICINGS;-Saturday ,August 15th, was a real Summer Day; Preperations completed. The Band appearing with their bright instruments and music gave the signal note, our Rural Fete is in full swing. New Marske turned out loyal and we were pleased to see the few from Old Marske with us.The gate was not a big one,but all went well. Mr.George Gott with the valuable help of Mr.James Hall,Mr.C.Dunn,Mr.Ward and others set the sports going with a swing, and we were pleased to see the good old sports as well as the good young sports.Mrs.Railton with her Mothers and Babies kept Dr.Fellows very busy judging the young competitors.Tea was served by a body of lady workers, too many to mention names, how busy and happy these good people made themselves.Toffee Stall,Weighing Machine, etc, etc, all added to the variety of the days enjoyment and the Greasy Pole was too greasy?;Mr.C.Corner,John Groom,James Millward, were well up the Pole, BUT !.Lord and Lady Zetland came along and distributed the prizes. The Cricket Hut became the centre of much pride and interest,as the competitors came forward to receive their awards from Lady Zetland;after a few words from our Patrons and a hearty applause from the people the programme was then brought to a close by Dancing and more attempts to reach the top of the Pole, darkness draws the curtain over our Rendezvous; The Church Hall received large number of Folk who dont want to know the way to go to bed at least for a few hours to be. Sunday, the 16th, was marked by a Flower Service at 3p.m. our young People bringing an offering of beautiful Flowers and Fruit which were sent to the North Ormesby Hostpital. At Evensong the Rev.L.P.B.Knight, paid his first visit and gave us a very helpful Sermon taking for his text ''He gave thanks and took courage.''Thursday Evening brought a few faithful ones to hear the vicar. SATURDAY:-The Day of Dedication, completing 50 years. Holy Communion was celebrated with special rememberance of those who have passed into Paradise.

SUNDAY:-23rd.brought our Jubilee Festival to a close. Holy Communion 6-30 Choral Eucharist 9-0 brought 74 Communicants to the real Service of Thanksgiving. Evensong with Procession and Anthem, Sermon by Rev.W.G.Paddy, (once priest - in - Charge of S.Thomas') gave us some helpful thoughts from the text ''He filleth the hungry Soul with goodness'' we record our thanks to the Visiting Preachers, Mr.J.Vasey ,for officiating at the organ, to those who sent Flowers for the decorations. It is not easy to thank individuals when there are so many willing workers therefore we record our Thanks to all who helped in any way and to those who gave in cash or kind, ,may it have been a Service of Joy.

Now for the FUTURE. Are we to go forward , never heeding the difficulties but as someone has said,''use them as stepping Stones to higher things'' or be content with marking time or perhaps becoming a loud Stone in the path of prayers, much will depend upon our Idea of Service; our Love for Him and His Church may we indeed give thanks and take courage knowing that He filleth the hungry Soul with Goodness.

''JUBILEE JOTTINGS'' is now on Sale and is selling well, 9d each, have you a copy ? when buying a copy you are receiving a little book worth keeping, also you are helping our Jubilee Funds, Mr.Geo.Smith, Marske and Mrs.Millburn, New Marske will supply you a copy.
The Church Hall is now open at 6 p.m for Men and Young Men for Reading and Games, Papers Magazines, Books. Table Games, will be very acceptable. Has anyone a Billiard Table to give away or sell cheap?
Brother T.Charlton, who has began his training for work as a Church Army Evangelist, has been sent by the Church Army to work in this parish. Brother Chralton will visit at the Aerodrome for the present help with the Service and work at New Marske, most of his mornings, will be taken up with study.
