1947 Winners
 | This photo shows you New Marske Silver Band posing in a winning mood. The band had just won at Belle Vue,a brass band competition held in Manchester.
The competition was held in the September of that year and the 'Test Piece' was Henry V.
From a personnel experience, as i played in this band in the 1980's playing at a major event like The Nationals ,undergoing months of 'Test Piece, practise and performing to the best on the day is very nerve racking.
Hats off to these guys for pulling it off.

Band History
In a busy time at New Marske at around 1875 a group of miners approached their boss,s Pease and Partners with intention of starting a brass band, they agreed and the band was born.
With the support of the miners and the miners union they agreed to deduct a penny a week for the upkeep of the band.
As with many mining villages New Marske now had its own 'Band'
Due to the original mine named after Upleatham - Upleatham Mines Band began life.
The band became extinct at around 1923 when the mines closed ,at this time due to the lack of work for New Marske folk many families moved out.
And Upleatham Mines Band was no more.
As with many mining villages 'Bands'life went on and it was not until 1937 that the band changed its name to New Marske Silver Band.
In the same year the band decided that they needed a new 'Band room' and with the help of the local council a new home was sourced.
A hut from the first world war, from Longbeck Trading Estate was bought this was situated on modern day Pontac Road ,adjacent to Beacon Drive.
The hut was 90 ft long and 25ft wide ,apart from a rehearsal hut for the band it also doubled up as a 'Dance Hall' for the village.
As far as i know pictures of this Band Hut are scarce. If you have photo's please let me know.

Old Band Hall
 | Picture from around 1957 taken in front of 50 Arthur Terrace showing you a young Margaret Abbott.
In the background you can see the old band hall that New Marske Silver Band used to practise in.
Also you can see the garden and pig sty's belonging to Jack Brown.
Jacks garden is now the back gardens to the house's on Pontac Road, the band hall was roughly situated adjacent to Beacon Drive.
The band hall was also used by the village for 'Threpenny Hops' dances usually held on a Friday or Saturday night.
Photo and information kindly submitted by Margaret Sherwood (nee Abbott). |
