Pear Tree Cottage alias Keepers Cottage

This photograph first appeared in the book 'New Marske Looking Back' written and compiled by the late Ena Holloway and the then vicar of St Thomas' Alan Hughes.

Cyclists At Sparrow Park Cottage (Granny Oxberry's Cottage).

No Names are known of these cyclists.

In the 1891 census for New Marske it was occupied by David and Priscilla Hare.

In 1901 David is not on the census records ,Priscilla aged 55 wife ,Rose(daughter) aged 17,dressmaker,and John Beacon ,lodger ,ironstone miner, occupied 'Keepers Cottage.

Many villagers will remember the cottage as belonging to 'Granny Oxbury.

My mothers memoirs of the cottage.

We used to go to the cottage to help her out, this would be the early late 1940's early 1950's ,and she was a very old women then, probably in her 80's,she did not let us in the house ,errands such as running to the shop for her as the old CO-OP was just around the corner ,or just 'scrubbing a step' for her.
The plum trees were always laden with fruit and we hoped 'Granny' would give us some as a reward for our hard work.

Granny always wore dark clothing, like a long black or grey dress from neck to boots, she also wore a Bonnet on her head.

I went into the cottage on one occasion ,the floors were of uneven slab tiles, the old 'black range' occupied the back room ,cold running water only,no electricity.

They had relatives at Sparrow Park Farm as of the Moscrop Family.

The cottage finally abandoned and in such a delapited state gave way in the 1960's and was demolished.

The Yorkshire Lass Pub now occupies the site.

The pub was built upon the cottage's foundations,it was also known as Pear Tree Cottage.

Today Pear Tree Court, the O.A.P Flats complex is named after this.

It is reported that in the 1980's the ghost of 'Granny Oxbury' was seen in the pub and also walking in the adjacent fields.

If anyone has more information on the photo or more memoirs of the cottage - please let me know.

Frederick Oxbury

Husband of 'Granny Oxbury, Frederick is seen here sat with his dog in an adjacent field near to Pear Tree Cottage and Sparrow Park Farm, probably in the late 1930's.
