NYMX regulars may well know the Smith family from South Yorkshire, who have been around the scene for a while and are generally regarded as being a pretty friendly bunch. Riders Nigel and Lee both competed regularly with NYMX in our maiden season in 2007.
In November 2007 Nigel was diagnosed with a rare form of cancer, and he’s being treated at Weston Park Cancer Hospital in Sheffield. Lee has set up a fundraising website with the aim of trying to raise £5,000 in the next 18 months for the hospital’s Cancer Appeal. During this time the family will undertake a series of challenges, the first of which is Lee running the White Peak Marathon in May - a 26.2 miles off-road race in the Peak District around Matlock.
If you would like to support a fellow rider through this difficult period then please visit the following website:
http://www.justgiving.com/nigelsmithappeal
All donations to the site can be made online, are secure and are sent electronically to The Weston Park Hospital Cancer Appeal (it works much like PayPal does). If you are a UK taxpayer, they can automatically reclaim 28% Gift Aid on your behalf too, so your donation is worth even more. For cash/cheque donations please contact Lee Smith direct on 07889 010823.
So any help (no matter how small) will be GREATLY received, and would mean an awful lot the Smith family. Nigel was still racing in November (less than 4 months ago) and he even won 2 Championships last year, so that just shows you how quickly the family's lives have been turned upside-down by this, and how it really can happen to any of us.
NYMX are pleased to offer their full supprt to this very worthwhile cause, and we very much hope to see both Nigel and Lee back on the start line in the near future.
