WELCOME

Welcome to the Church of Our Lady, which serves the communities of Acomb, Dringhouses, Woodthorpe, Holgate, and the villages and country districts between York and the A1. There is also a small church called St Joseph's in the village of Green Hammerton, which is part of the extended parish of Our Lady's.
You are most welcome to take part in the many activities, groups and ministries which form part of our Parish life. As you browse through this leaflet you may find something of special interest to you. The address and contact numbers for the Parish Priest, Fr Pat Smith, are printed at the end, do feel free to get in touch for more detailed information.
The Parish is a living community, and constantly growing and changing. This leaflet gives a picture of how things stand at the beginning of 2008, but do keep an eye on our weekly Bulletin, which gives more up to date information on the day to day life of the Parish
.

PARISH MINISTRIES, GROUPS & ACTIVITIES

THE LITURGY

Worship of God is at the heart of Parish Life and we have several ministries which enhance our liturgical celebrations.

READERS & MINISTERS OF COMMUNION ...
A good team of Readers and Communion Ministers help at the Sunday and weekday Masses, but there's always room for more. The Parish Priest would be happy to put you in touch with the people who organise these ministries, if you feel you would like to be involved with them.

MUSIC ....
Our cantors sing the psalm at Sunday Mass, and generally support the singing in church. Have a word with any of the organists if you would like be a cantor. Or perhaps your musical talents could be used in other ways!! We are always interested in anyone who can play the organ; and there is a music group which plays regularly, and would always be glad of new members.

ALTAR SERVERS ....
If you would like to serve on the Altar have a word with Fr Pat or Angela Clarke. New altar servers are always welcome.

CHILDREN'S LITURGY .....
During the first part of the 9.30am Mass on Sundays there is a creche for the under fours, and a special Liturgy of the Word for older children.

CHURCH CLEANING & FLOWER ARRANGING ....
These are very important ministries, which make the church a welcoming and uplifting place, but it can be difficult find eager volunteers - so there are always vacancies if you could help!!

SACRAMENTAL PREPARATION

FIRST HOLY COMMUNION & CONFIRMATION ....
Children and young people are prepared for First Communion and Confirmation by a group of Catechists, and of course, by the teachers in our schools.

BAPTISM & MARRIAGE ...
A husband and wife from the Parish help to prepare parents for the Baptism of their children. Marriage preparation is done by Fr Pat, and there is a course at St Bede's Pastoral Centre, details of which are on the Notice Board.

ST VINCENT DE PAUL SOCIETY

The SVP meets at 7pm every Thursday. Its members visit the elderly, housebound and sick in their homes, in hospital, and in Residential and Nursing Homes. Within the Parish there is a woman's prison, Askham Grange, and although the general public cannot visit this without special permission, a prison visitors system exists whereby individuals can be trained and authorised to visit a prisoner. Members of the SVP can give more information about this.

ASCENT

This is an organisation for those in their middle and later years ( 50+) It meets in the Fr Kelly Room on the second Tuesday of the month from 2 - 4pm

PARISH COUNCIL

The Parish Council meets about every three months and helps in many areas of church life. You are welcome to attend the meetings.
