WELCOME
Welcome to the Church of Our Lady, which serves the communities of Acomb, Dringhouses, Woodthorpe, Holgate, and the villages and country districts between York and the A1. There is also a small church called St Joseph's in Green Hammerton, which is part of the extended parish of Our Lady's.
You are most welcome to take part in the many ministries, activities, and groups which form part of our Parish life. As you browse through this leaflet you may find something of special interest to you. The address and contact numbers for the Parish Priest, Fr Patrick Smith, are printed at the end, do feel free to get in touch for more detailed information.
The Parish is a living community, and constantly growing and changing. This leaflet gives a picture of how things stand at the beginning of 2012, but do keep an eye on our weekly Bulletin, and Website which give more up to date information on the day to day life of the Parish.
The Parish has a JOINT PRIMARY SCHOOL with English Martyrs. It is called OUR LADY QUEEN OF MARTYRS and details are at the end.
PARISH MINISTRIES, GROUPS & ACTIVITIES
THE LITURGY
Worship of God is at the heart of Parish Life and we have several ministries which enhance our liturgical celebrations.
READERS & COMMUNION MINISTERS .... A good team of Readers and Eucharistic Ministers help at the Sunday and weekday Masses, but there's always room for more. The Parish Priest would be happy to put you in touch with the people who organise these ministries, if you feel you would like to be involved with them.
MUSIC .... Our cantors sing the psalm at Sunday Mass, and generally support the singing in church. Have a word with any of the organists if you would like to be a cantor. Or perhaps your musical talents could be used in other ways!! We are always interested in anyone who can play the organ; and there is a music group which plays regularly, and would be glad of new members.
ALTAR SERVERS .... If you would like to serve on the Altar have a word with Fr Pat. New altar servers are always welcome.
CHILDREN'S LITURGY ..... During the first part of the 9.30am Mass on Sundays there is a creche for the under fours, and a special Liturgy of the Word for older children.
CHURCH CLEANING & FLOWER ARRANGING .... These are very important ministries, which make the church a welcoming and uplifting place - there are always vacancies if you could help!!.
SACRAMENTAL PREPARATION
FIRST HOLY COMMUNION & CONFIRMATION .... Children and young people are prepared for First Communion and Confirmation by a group of Catechists, and by the teachers in our schools.
BAPTISM & MARRIAGE ... A couple from the Parish help to prepare parents for the Baptism of their children. Marriage preparation is done by Fr Pat, and there are courses at St Bede's Pastoral Centre, details of which are on the Notice Board in the church porch.
THE FR KELLY ROOM
Fr Kelly was a very much loved Parish Priest here. After his death it was decided to name a newly built meeting Room after him. The room is used for weekday mass and meetings. Access to it is from the car park.
ST VINCENT DE PAUL SOCIETY
The SVP meets at 7pm every second Thursday. Its members visit the elderly and housebound in their homes, in hospital, and in Residential and Nursing Homes. Within the Parish there is a woman's prison, Askham Grange, and although the general public cannot visit this without special permission, a prison visitors system exists whereby individuals can be trained and authorised to visit a prisoner. Members of the SVP can give more information about this.
ASCENT
This is an organisation for those in their middle and later years ( 50+) It meets in the Fr Kely Room on the second Tuesday of the month from 2pm - 4pm
PARISH COUNCIL
The Parish Council meets about every two months and helps in many areas of church life. You are welcome to attend the meetings.
