Some astonishing prices were seen at Corinphila in June

A few outstanding GRI items attracted bids that were way over estimate in the recent Corinphila auction in Switzerland. The highest price achieved was for lot 563 - the "1" on "2d./20pf" New Guinea which has always been a much sought after stamp.

Philatelic covers also fetched a huge premium! This 2s/2Mk Deutsch Neu Guinea overprint on an internal cover posted from Rabaul on 22 January 1915 went for over three times estimate. Estimate: 1750 SF Realised: 5400 SF

1914-15 5mm Setting 3d on 25pf Thick '3' SG 22e tied to Captain Fry cover by one of two strikes of the rare 'BUKA/(DEUTSCH-/NEUGUINEA)/16.11/14' cds (""frozen"" date) in violet, flap removed, Cat £500 mint: unpriced used. Holcombe Certificate (1988). [Although the cds fell into Australian hands (only in December 1914), this is the only example seen by us, although several similar covers have been recorded. A lesser strike of the same date tying the GRI 1d on 3pf to a small piece sold at auction in Germany for €2100 in 2002. In the German period, 'BUKA' is the outstanding rarity: an example of 29.5/14 on a mere piece sold at auction in Germany for Dm22,000 in 2001!] Est: $A4000; Realised $8000
