Early Finschhafen cds
This item is currently (15 Oct 2003) available on E-Bay.
I was not aware that strikes in colours other than black are known. Indeed Powell states that "all strikes have been in black"
He also states "Strikes from a forged canceller, closely resembling type 1, but in which the fig 1 appears without serif at foot are to be found on the German Empire issues of 1880 with dates 21.2.88 and 19.11.88."

HATFELDHAFEN Cancellation
This item is also being offered on E Bay (28 Oct 2003) - and is obviously from the same source as the Finschhafen item. The two are so very similar that they must both be treated with great suspicion.
Please report any similar items that you come across.

Insured letter from Manus 1914
Recently (April 2004) offered in a German auction with an estimate of 2000 euros - a most interesting insured letter from Manus to Rabaul. Here's the description and a rough translation:
Insgesamt sehr attraktive Presentation.
LP. 2000,00
1914, ship design 50 Pfg. and 1 Mark, on postage-insured letter of over 2000 Marks valuation, weight 20.5 gram, from "MANUS GERMAN NEW GUINEA) 30,1 14" to the Imperial Government's Chief Cashier at Rabaul with arrival stamp of 4.2.14. On the back are five nearly fully receiving seals of the "Kaiserliche Station Manus". The letter is correctly franked, on the left with postal tax "1,50". Letters from Manus are extremely rare in German times, a genuine local, insured letter, with postal markings is a great rarity of the Colonial period. The envelope shows two weak central folds but is otherwise in clean condition with minimum errors, Altogether very attractive presentation.
Est. 2000,00
