PNG material in recent auctions
On this page I will post news of recent auctions featuring notable material from our areas of interest. The first such report features lot 376 in Premier Philately's Auction No. 93 held on 26/01/2002. A 1917 cover from Boyup Brook (WA) to "982 Pte ET Tonkin/Rabaul/New Britain" with "Miltarischerseits unter/Kriegschrecht geoffnet" Censor label on the reverse, Copenhagen cds 3.2.19 on the face, somewhat the worse for wear. The S.S. Matunga, en route to Rabaul, was captured by the German raider "Wolf". The mail was sent to Germany where it was held until after the war had ended. Letters were then returned through the Red Cross in Denmark. This item is said to be the only such letter from Western Australia. Estimate . . . . . A$500.00 Realised . . . . . A$1500.00 | |

HATFELDHAFEN Cancellation of 9/11/1891
This item appeared in the Nagel Philatelics "German Area Mail Bid Sale" on March 17th 2002
HATFELDHAFEN cancellation dated 9/11/91 on large piece of a preprinted envelope of the NEU GUINEA COMPAGNIE. The Hatzfeldhafen post office was already closed by 9/11 1891 and this is a known reversal of the month and day numerals. This fact is mentionned at the bottom of page 163 of Dr Steuer's handbook as deserving a specialist's evaluation. Only a few examples are known and this particular one was purchased several years ago in Germany at a Kohler auction for aproximately $1250 US. The 1997 Ronald Steuer color photo Attest asserts its rarity and mentions that it is in good condition with the exception of some wrinkles in the paper. Est: $1200-1300; Realised $1100 + 5% comm.

Rare Eitape cancel (T29)
In the Premier Auction (110 - May 2004) lot 1354 attracted much interest.
1922 cover to the Administrator at Rabaul with 2½d tied by very fine strike of the double-circle 'DISTRICT OFFICE/10JUN1922/EITAPE' cds (Powell #29: ERD, before the distortion at right was clearly evident) in violet, small piece missing at top & heavy vertical fold. [One of the rarest markings of the period & the only example known to us on cover. No cover in the "Bismarck" Collection - sold by us on 19/7/2003 - but the only recorded cover with the similar #P30 sold there for $7000]
Estimate A$2500
Realised A$2900
