"Wheely Bin" Post Boxes in PNG
Our member Roy Materne send us the latest news from PNG Dear Friends
Last Friday I was hoping to be able to visit the Philatelic Bureau to get stamps for further PPS Cover sets and also to get an update with regards the PO's investigation regarding the lost (stolen?) Paiam set # 50. Unfortunately a power system failure combined with industrial action in PNG created problems and delays with my flight and we only arrived after 4.00pm. My next opportunity will be next Wednesday/Thursday.
PPS Cover set #61 was sent to Wabag on 25 Feb 2005. I have not yet received it. PPS set #58 was resent to Kerevat on 25 Feb 2005 after increased postage (stamps) was added. The set originally sent late December was only received mid January and was then sent back to Boroko not postmarked. I have not yet received my copy. I hope to send out 2 sets later this week.
After a long search I have found our missing camera to computer cable to enable the downloading of photos to the computer. Earlier today I have sent to you the photos (2) of the posting Box at the Crown Plaza Hotel, the hotel I stay in while in POM. One could assume similar boxes are situated in other hotels in POM and possibly other cities in PNG. I was told that the bin is checked/emptied once a week. In Australia the type of "Posting Box" as shown is known as a wheely bin...something you put your rubbish in and once a week you roll it out to the curbside for the mechanised garbage truck to come along and mechanically empty the garbage into the truck...hence the name "Wheely Bin ". If you have not received the photos, let me know.
The POST COURIER reported on Monday 14th Feb the Wau Post Office reopening after having been closed since 2001. The PO is situated in Donna's Store Ltd as an agency PO.
New Aerogrammes - Six (6) new areogrammes have been released depicting various cultural aspects of PNG. Sale price K2.50. The stamp imprint has "postage paid" written vertically upwards on the left side. What has not been publicised however is the SAME TYPE but lower price version especially inscribed DOMESTIC POST in red ink beside the stamp imprint and sold for 75t????. I will have to recheck the price.
Air Niugini's inflight magazine in its March/April issue has a rather glamorised article about Post PNG and it's manager. This coincides with Air Niugini selling a small range of Philatelic Bureau products...year albums etc.... on-board it international inflight duty free sales.
Thats all for this time,
Warm Greetings
Roy
