Away Games!

The Choir has enjoyed a number of visits both in this country and abroad. Our first visit was to Trendleburg in Germany where members stayed with local families and enjoyed great hospitality.
Two years later saw us in Belgium staying in the beautiful city of Ghent. Concerts were given in St Pauluskerk and also in the Gothic Hall, Poperinge near to Ypres. Visits to various war museums / grave yards plus the friendship of a supporter of our concerts who had suffered during the 2nd World War, added great poignancy to our visit.
Our last foreign visit was to the Rhine area of Germany where we sang in the beautiful church of Florenskirche in Koblentz and in wonderful gardens in the Spa town of Bad Bertrich. Robert's momentous recital in Bonn Cathedral will go down in the annals of the choir's history!!
Visits have not been restricted to overseas, however. A most enjoyable weekend was spent in Greystoke, near Penrith in the Lake District where we received royal treatment from the local people. We sang in their historic parish church and the next day in the ruins of Brougham Castle.
Since then we have spent a relaxing and friendly weekend at beautiful Wydale Hall near Scarborough. Here we gave an outdoor concert as part of the Hall's 50th Anniversary as the York Diocesan Centre.

More recently -

Since then we have visited Surrey and Berkshire. The main reason was to sing at a wedding in Old Woking - the son of one of our trusty basses was getting married to Camilla (no need to fear The Tower of London - different Camilla!) It was decided by our Musical Director that if we were travelling that distance, then we should inflict - sorry, wrong word! - enrich the lives of the good people of Surrey and Berkshire. So it was that on the Saturday evening we gave a concert of light music at Crowthorne Methodist Church (the audience being rather bemused by the "humour" of our compere, Derek!)

After spending the night at Wellington College, and enjoying a little light refreshment (courtesy of the groom's parents) we descended upon the unsuspecting people of St George's Church, Owlsmoor where we led Sung Eucharist. A delicious lunch was provided by the good people of the church before we headed north.
These visits are as much about socialising as they are singing (although not perhaps to the Musical Director!) and help to make the Choir the happy, friendly group of people which it is. We hope that with the support of all choir members these worthwhile visits will continue.

In conclusion . . .

. . . . it had been a superb weekend - not least because we were joined by Robert, former accompanist and now at Chelmsford Cathedral. The picture seems to show someone masquerading as our Musical Director "toasting" his good health!
Roll on the next time!!!
