Selby
'X' marks the spot. It's a fair old jolly.... Take the A19 off the by-pass, South to SELBY.
At BARLBY, you have the choice to continue straight on along the SELBY BY-PASS, which is renamed the A63, or to turn right onto the A19 (continuation) which goes straight into SELBY centre.
If you turn off along the A19 to SELBY CENTRE, you cross the old Toll Bridge and go past the Abbey.
Just past the Abbey, be careful to bear right along the A1238 to THORPE WILLOUGHBY (and LEEDS) - NOT left along the A19 to Brayton and Doncaster.
If you choose the A63 SELBY BY-PASS, then continue for what seems like forever, and exit at the FOURTH ROUNDABOUT right, along the A1238 to THORPE WILLOUGHBY.
This is called the Leeds Road locally, and takes you back toward Selby and the Tennis Club. |
|
 | The Tennis Club is down a very narrow dirt-road called COURT LANE. Don't confuse this with Court Drive, which does NOT have access to the Tennis Club.
Travelling from SELBY, take the A63 signposted to LEEDS. As you leave Selby, on your left you'll pass WHITE LODGE (street), then THE LINK (street). The next left is then COURT LANE.
Keep your eyes peeled for the brown 'SELBY TENNIS CLUB' sign on the right opposite the COURT LANE entrance. The entrance itself is virtually invisible as you drive from this direction.
Travelling back into Selby from the A63 by-pass, you'll first drive through THORPE WILLOUGHBY. Then watch out for on your right CEDAR CRESCENT, WEST PARK and COURT DRIVE. Do NOT turn into Court Drive!!!
Instead, keep your eyes peeled for the brown 'SELBY TENNIS CLUB' sign on your left and turn into COURT LANE which is immediately after Court Drive. |

Sherburn-in-Elmet TC
From YORK, take the A64 West toward TADCASTER, and then turn off South on the A162 sign-posted SHERBURN-in-ELMET.
From CAWOOD, simply take the B1222 West which takes you directly to the centre of SHERBURN-in-ELMET.
From SELBY, take the A63 West toward LEEDS. Before getting to the A1, turn North on the A162 sign-posted SHERBURN-in-ELMET. |
|
 | From YORK on the A162 SHERBURN BY-PASS, drive straight on at the roundabout sign-posted SHERBURN.
The Finkle Hill Sports Ground is only about a quarter mile further, on the left. Just prior to the Tennis Courts, you'll see DC Graham NURSERIES on the right.
The Sports Ground entrance is IMMEDIATELY after the Courts and the Bowling green, and on the LEFT.
From CAWOOD along the B1222, turn right at the lights and go up FINKLE HILL past the CO-OP and then the POLICE STATION on your right.
About 100 yards beyond the POLICE STATION, and on the right is the entrance to the Sports Ground.
Driving North from SELBY along the A162, you can either take the B1222 exit into SHERBURN, or continue along the A162 North, and take the first, LEFT exit at the roundabout and head South down FINKLE HILL, as for drivers from YORK.

Sheriff Hutton Tennis Club
 | Sheriff Hutton seems to be smack-bang in the middle of nowhere, eschewing all major arteries. Perhaps the best way to get there (please correct me, if I'm wrong), is to be born there.....
No, it's probably best to get yourself in the first place to STRENSALL (see Map below). Then, instead of turning off for the Tennis Club, carry straight on along the main YORK ROAD as it winds its way through Strensall Village.
York Road bears sharp right, past the HALF MOON pub on your left, and about 200 yards further on your left is the SHIP INN. Just past the SHIP INN, turn left. Drive straight ahead until you reach Sheriff Hutton. |
|
|
 | What started out as the Sheriff Hutton Road back in Strensall, becomes FINKLE STREET on the approach to SH Village.
At the main crossroads in Sheriff Hutton (2nd crossroads), turn right into NORTH GARTH LANE and immediately look to your right for the entrance to the Tennis Club. There is off-road parking under shady trees. Ah, bliss....
There only seems to be 2 Courts at the Club in Sheriff Hutton. Having never been there, myself, I'm not sure if they have another Court secreted away elsewhere in the Village. Anyone know? - if so, use the Mail Form to set us straight... |

Stamford Bridge Tennis Club
 | | OK, easy peasy. Take the A64 by-pass East, and leave at the A1079 HULL ROAD junction - BUT take the A166 BRIDLINGTON ROAD exit which is the one before the Hull Road. |
|
|
 | The A166 Bridlington Road does a sharp right-left as it crosses the river at the narrow STAMFORD BRIDGE - be prepared for queued traffic....
Immediately you've crossed the river, look out for the Post Office on your right, and take that right turn into CHURCH ROAD.
Follow Church Road as it bears right and continue until you see the right fork which is LOW CATTON ROAD. The Tennis Club is situated in the bottom lefthand corner of the Cricket Ground. Parking is on-street, I'm afraid.
NOTE: Stamford Bridge TC have 2 hardcourts, but in the Summer, they usually provide an extra grass court in the westerly corner of the Cricket Ground, a little ways off from the 2 hardcourts.
The ball moves more quickly on the grass court and bounces much lower and more unpredictably. Serve & Volley tactics suit grass courts much better. Team Captains, pick your most able volleyers to play on the grass court - they'll be stuck there for 3 rubbers.
Also, after rain, or during drizzle, the grass court can be treacherous. Visiting Captains have the option to choose playing ALL 9 rubbers on the hard courts - which will obviously take 50% longer! |

Starbeck Tennis Club
 | Correction (see Knaresborough) - STARBECK are our most Westerly Club. In fact, they're just 2-an-a-bit miles further along the very same road - the A59 - between Knaresborough and Harrogate.
Coming from YORK, follow the directions given for KNARESBOROUGH, but continue along the A59, through KNARESBOROUGH CENTRE, across the RIVER, and about a mile further to the outskirts of STARBECK. If you get to Starbeck Station, then you've gone too far.
If you're travelling from SELBY, CAWOOD or SHERBURN-in-ELMET, then it's best to make your way to WETHERBY, and then take the A661 to HARROGATE.
Once in Harrogate, head back East along the A59 toward KNARESBOROUGH, and be prepared to turn LEFT about 400 yards past STARBECK STATION. |
|
|
 | The entrance to STARBECK Tennis Club is off BOGS LANE on the outskirts of Starbeck, just past HILLBANK GROVE.
Travelling from YORK, passing through KNARESBOROUGH, you'll notice HARROGATE GOLF CLUB on your LEFT. When that ends, with the Clubhouse, you're entering STARBECK, and BOGS LANE is on your RIGHT.
If you get into Starbeck High Street and see the Train Station, then you've overshot.
Travelling from SELBY, CAWOOD or SHERBURN-in-ELMET, through WETHERBY, then you'll drive completely through STARBECK, past the Train Station on your LEFT.
The 8th turning on your LEFT, past the Train Station is BOGS LANE, on the outskirts of STARBECK.
If you suddenly see HARROGATE GOLF COURSE on your RIGHT, then you'll have driven too far and need to turnaround.
Parking is off-road next to the Clubhouse - and yes, there IS a toilet in the Clubhouse - so you won't have to go down the Lane!

Stillington Tennis Club
STILLINGTON is a long way, but fairly straightforward to find. You just need to get on the B1363 WIGGINTON ROAD North out of York.
Just get on the A1237 Ringroad, and turn left (North) at the roundabout after the Clifton Moor Tesco roundabout following signs for the B1363, which takes you all the way to STILLINGTON.....
....or, you can pick up the WIGGINTON ROAD in York itself. The Wigginton Road goes past York District Hospital.
The road does dog-leg right-left in SUTTON-ON-THE-FOREST, but you just keep following signs for B1363 Stillington and heading North. |
|
 | After Sutton-on-the-Forest, the B1363 Wigginton Road, becomes CARR LANE.
Before you get to Stillington proper, you'll pass ROSEBERRY LANE on your left and then you turn right into the tiny entrance to the Stillington Sports Ground which contains Stillington Cricket Club and the Bowls Club.
There's a snaky driveway into the Sports Ground. The 3 Tennis Courts are further along (on foot) past the Cricket Club buildings and the Bowling Green. |

Strensall & Towthorpe TC
At the top of the known World is this place. Beyond here, be Dragons (see Alne)
If you're going through Town, then get yourself on the Huntington Road and travel up past New Earswick, Huntington, Earswick and Towthorpe.
If that sounds too daunting, then follow the A1237 Ringroad all the way round, exiting at the Earswick roundabout, and head up to Strensall.
Just past Towthorpe and adjacent to the Army Camp, you fork off LEFT to Strensall. |
|
 | Along the York Road take the 1st or 2nd left into Barley Rise and make your way around the crescent to Durlston Drive.
At the end of Durlston Drive turn left into the lane leading to the Tennis Club. There is parking on the left of the Courts.
|
|
Sutton-on-Derwent TC
 | Head out East on the A64 by-pass. Leave the A64 at the A1079 BEVERLEY Road exit, and immediately turn right onto the B1228 for ELVINGTON.
Carry straight on, through Elvington and across the river to SUTTON-ON-DERWENT. |
|
|
 | Just after ELVINGTON, you cross the river and the B1228 bears sharp right, and then a left as you come into SUTTON-on-DERWENT.
Keep following the MAIN ROAD (still the B1228) as it turns sharp right in Sutton-on-Derwent. The Courts are then immediately on your left, with off-street parking, behind the Community Hall in the middle of the site.
Sutton-on-Derwent have 2 real- and two synthetic- grass Courts. Easy access to a loo and a kitchen in the Community Hall in between the two pairs of Courts. |
