Tadcaster Tennis Club

Everyone knows where Taddy is, surely?

...if not - it's West from YORK, along the A64 BY-PASS. You need to turn off the A64 onto the A659 sign-posted to TADCASTER.

If you get to the turning for the A1(M), then you've gone too far!

Having left the A64 for the A659 TADCASTER, there's a long lead-in until you hit Taddy proper.

Soon after you've crossed the river, you'll see JOHN SMITHS on your left and you need to TURN RIGHT opposite the Brewery, onto the A659 to WETHERBY.

(It doesn't help matters that nearly every road in Tadcaster is called the A659)

Follow the A659 WETHERBY Road, as it bears SHARP LEFT, and then immediately, where it bears sharp right, CARRY STRAIGHT ON along STATION ROAD.

Before the POLICE STATION on the corner of FAIRFIELD ROAD, there is a narrow access road to the Tennis Club, on your left, to the left of some CONIFER TREES.

There is a small Car Park (underneath the blue 'P' in the map), just behind the Club house.

Tadcaster has 3 Courts. Courts 1 & 2 were pristine (when I last visited), but Court 3 was gravelly black tarmac, behind 1 & 2, and on a lower level. Court 3 was a very different playing experience to the other two Courts.

This is an old aerial photo - the Courts might have been resurfaced since then. Please let us know by sending an e-mail via the Mail Form (left).

Tollerton TC

Tollerton is next-door to Alne, so it's a similar deal...

Take the A19 THIRSK ROAD North out of York, and keep driving. TOLLERTON is just off the A19 on your left. You get 2 bites of the Cherry.

If you miss the first signposted left turn to Tollerton at WAREHILL LANE, then there's another immediately afterward at the Cross Lanes junction, where you turn left down SYKES LANE -again signposted 'TOLLERTON'.

Unfortunately, Tollerton Tennis Club couldn't afford to site their Club in Tennis Court Lane - it's way too exclusive at that end of the Village...

So, if you come into TOLLERTON, North along Sykes Lane (which becomes STATION ROAD), then you cross the Railway Line, and then slum it, left into NEWTON ROAD at the major junction in the Village.

The Tennis Club is a bit further along AFTER the the second turning on the left - just before the third left, in fact.

Approaching Tollerton along Warehill Lane, you also cross the Railway Line, and then bear right at the junction with York Bridge Road.

York Bridge Road becomes Newton Road, and the Tennis Club is just AFTER the first right.

The narrow driveway up the left of the Club leads to a Car Park, just in front of the 3 Courts.

Wheldrake Tennis Club

Head out of York on the A19 Fulford Road toward Selby. Turn LEFT at Crockey Hill to Wheldrake.

You arrive in Wheldrake travelling along Main Street but you need to turn LEFT early on into North Lane and take the fourth LEFT into Broad Highway. The Club is further up that street on the RIGHT.

Wigginton Tennis Club

Simple - get onto the B1363 WIGGINTON ROAD North out of York.

You can do this by turning off the A1237 By-pass at the roundabout after the Clifton Moor Tesco roundabout....

....or, pick up the WIGGINTON ROAD in Town - it's the road that goes past York District Hospital.

The B1363 Wigginton Road is surrounded by farmland - lots of horsey places...

You're given warning of Wigginton when the houses start appearing on your right again. Prepare to turn right into MILL LANE - it's signposted Wigginton and Haxby.

About 250 yards down Mill Lane there is a dirt-track which leads you to the Tennis Club site. There is parking in front of the 4 Courts.

Wilberfoss TC

From the A64 Ringroad, take the A1079 Hull Road until you see Wilberfoss signposted on the left.

You should enter Wilberfoss by MAIN STREET. Turn left onto STORKING LANE.

As STORKING LANE bears right, at the crown of the bend, there is a narrow road up to the Cricket ground and Tennis Courts. Drive up there and Car Parking is immediately North of the Tennis Courts.

Wistow Tennis Club

Aaaah, Wistow....it's so far away, that we have to go to a Portrait-shaped map....

Exit the A64 by-pass at the A19 Selby turn-off. Turn left off the slip-road roundabout and then first left again onto the B1222 CAWOOD ROAD.

As you come into Cawood, you'll cross the river and arrive at a crossroads. Turn left into THORPE LANE and follow the road around a sharp righthand turn. (See CAWOOD TENNIS CLUB Map for details)

Then take the first left into WISTOWGATE, which is the B1223 SELBY ROAD. That takes you into Wistow itself.

In Wistow, as the Selby Road bears sharp left, take the second left into GEORGE STREET, and then the first left into LORDSHIP LANE.

Access to the Tennis Club is by JUBILEE ROAD, which is the second right along Lordship Lane.

York Tennis Club

York Tennis Club is situated on the huge sports complex at the 'Water End' end of the A19 SHIPTON ROAD.

To get there take the A19 Shipton Road turn-off from the A1237 RING-ROAD, just after you've crossed the river. Or, you can cross the river at WATER END and turn left at the traffic lights past the Youth Hostel.

From the WATER END end, the Sports Complex is about the fourth left. It's rather disappointing from the road - a low-rise, tatty building which looks like a neglected Working Men's Club, with a car park out front.

Although there are two 'entrances', to this car park, they're a bit picky and only the 'outer' one (the one furthest from the City Centre), is an entrance. The 'nearer' one is the exit. Got that?

Also, that car park in front, is NOT the Tennis Club car park. If you drive to the right of the squat Working Men's Club building, you're on a stoney, winding lane which circuitously takes you to the Tennis Courts, and the Tennis Club car park is right in front of the Courts.
