The Top Five..............WOW!
Head Coach Gill Nobbs took a team of seven Wetherby gymnasts to the first ever Bill Slater British Team Championships on the 17 June 2001 in Newcastle.
The team members were,
Joy Wilton
Eva Nobbs
Claire Stang
Rebecca Steele
Jaime Sawiuk
Grace Todd
Abigail Hatfield (res)
The gymnasts were set a challenge to achieve a team placement in the top half against 19 teams and to beat a local rival club.
Wetherby started on floor and the first gymnast up was Rebecca Steele. Rebecca set the trend for the other team members by performing good tumbles and a clean routine.
We then moved to the next apparatus and Jaime Sawiuk produced her best tucked Tsuki vault and Eva Nobbs had the second highest scoring vault of the day.
On to the bars, and the team were obviously well prepared. Confident in warm up and clean routines in competition.
Joy Wilton set the stage on beam with her mature and very clean routine. Grace Todd showed good control of her nerves with her rock steady planche mount. Claire Stang who has only recently come back into training performed brilliantly on beam, sticking her Side Somi without hesitation. Claire's beam routine completed the competition for Wetherby. The team had done their best, all that was left to do was wait.........
At the end of the first day of competition Wetherby were in POLE POSITION, narrowly beating local favourites North Tyne Gymnastics Club.On the second day the Wetherby gymnasts sat nervously in the audience and watched with their fingers crossed. Had they done enough?
Liverpool produced a complete team of somersault vaulters which put them into first place. Park-Wrekin perform faultless beam routines demonstrating there nerves of steel! Pipers Vale displayed there bar prowess with Katchevs and Jaegers to catch which gave them third place. Bristol Hawks showed excellent consistency and just squeezed into fourth place. Leaving Wetherby Gymnastics Club in fantastic FIFTH PLACE!! |
