Zone International - June 2001

What A Weekend!

Coach Gill Nobbs and 5 Wetherby gymnasts set off for Rushmoor Gymnastics Academy in Aldershot on Saturday 16 June 2001. Not knowing the extent of the fire damge to the gym or when their next training session would be!

Sunday morning came and Daisy Slater and Abigail Hatfield were the first to compete in the U12 Modified competition. Starting on floor, both girls performed a front somi walkout for the first time and Daisy danced beautifully through her brand new routine. Both gymnasts perform good vaults but were marked from low tariffs. On bars, Abigail landed her new dismount, backaway with half turn. She then completed her competition with a clean beam routine, sticking her flic-flic series and a new full twisting dismount.

Abigail and Daisy achieved 23 and 24 placed respectively. This was a very positive result as this was the first time the girls have competed outside the Yorkshire Region. They thoroughly enjoyed the experience.

In the next round, Jaime Sawiuk competed in the U14 Modified competition. She started on Floor and cope well with her new routine, ending her last tumble with a double twist. Jaime then moved to vault and performed a very high tuck Tsuki to score 8.100. On the bars Jaime performed a good cut to catch, a new element for her. Unfortunately she fell on her one and half twisting backaway. Later on it became clear that this cost her the bronze medal. Jaime finished her competition with a basic but steady beam routine landing her first Free Cartwheel in competition. Jaime placed fourth overall and had the second highest bar mark despite the dismount!

In the final competiton Joy Wilton and Eva Nobbs competed in the Open Age F.I.G competition. Eva started as she meant to go on with a good Handspring Tuck Front Somi vault to achieve the highest vault score of the day. They then moved to the bars where Eva completed several new elements successfully but unfortunately Joy missed time her Short Clear To Handstand and had to carry a 0.5 deduction on her score. Moving to the beam, both gymnasts held thier nerve and went clean. Eva showed determination in sticking her Free Cartwheel, it was the first time she attempted it in competition. The last piece was floor, Joy performed a intricate routine finishing on a one and half twist somersault dispite a painful knee. What guts and determination! Eva was last up on floor and the pressure was on, She performed a very clean routine with high tumbles.
Joy achieved 14 placed and was 9th overall on the floor. Eva was awarded the overall Open Age Zone International Champion. She won a £150, a free tracksuit from the Zone and a loverly gold medal.

What an end to such a dramatic weekend!

Well Done Girls - Despite The Chaos!

Inter-Regional Squad Challenge - October 2001

The Yorkshire team comprised of,

Eva Nobbs
Joy Wilton
Molly Williams
Naomi Walker
Kimberley King
Kirsty Chew

The competition was held at Liverpool with a 6/5/4 structure. The team started on beam, which is always a disadvantage! The beam was found to be very unstable and everyone was suffering from nerves. Eva did manage to perform a Change Leg Leap with Half turn, ‘E’ value, and was awarded the bonus. However, her score was low due to 2 falls from the apparatus.

On to floor and Joy performed a well prepared floor routine finishing on a secure One and Half twist. Eva’s target for this competition was to debut her Double Front Somersault (‘E’ value) on the floor. She did it to stand much to her delight and it certainly left an impression with the judges.

Vault, the new code only permitting one attempt. Due to this the gymnasts only performed there tried and tested vaults and were not able to gain valuable experience on newly achieved vaults.

Finishing on bars, Joy performed a sound short clear to handstand and attempted a Shoot To Catch (C value) for the first time. Eva performed well finishing on a very secure dismount.

This competition enable Joy and Eva to try out new elements and sequences without the pressure of winning. The team placed eighth. Four gymnasts on each piece with adequate start values were needed to achieve a top 3 ranking.

Yorkshire Team Competition - 7 October 2001

U9 Competition

Only 3 clubs were represented, Leeds, Greenhead and Wetherby.

Wetherby dominated the competition beating the opposition by 6 whole marks!

The Team members were

REBECCA TOWNSEND who performed very confidently on the beam and coped well with a new floor routine.

KATY PADGETT who vaulted well and achieved a high floor score.

HANNAH CHANPAKKEE who had the highest score of all the U9’s on beam.

HOLLY ELLIS who performed confidently on all apparatus but unfortunately fell on her flic on beam.

LAURA MOTTERSHEAD the youngest member of the team. Laura was the highest scoring U9 on three of the apparatus and performed her Back Giants on the bars for the first time.

U11 Team Face Stiff Opposition
Four teams were entered into this competition. The Leeds team were are main opponent as they had several In-Age gymnasts competing for them.

The Wetherby team performed without error but just couldn’t match the Leeds team start values and were beaten into second place by just 1 whole mark.

Our team members were

MELISSA KORN performed well going clean on the beam and achieving two tumble passes on the floor.

CHARLOTTE RUTHERFORD performed with her usual style and accuracy on all the pieces with a beautiful half twist on the floor.

DAISY SLATER also demonstrated her considerable talent and style on beam and floor, achieving the highest mark on floor of all the U11.

GRACE TODD showed her flair for beam achieveing the highest mark on beam of all the U11.

ABIGAIL HATFIELD the team captain gave her usual exact and consistent performance on all the apparatus scoring nearly eight on her bar routine.

Can Wetherby's Seniors Win 4 Years In A Row?
The answer is a dominating YES, by 9 whole marks!

3 teams were represented, 2 from Wetherby and 1 from Calderdale.

Our team members were

HELEN BOLTON who performed well despite her disrupted training due to starting university.

REBECCA STEELE who scored well on all apparatus sticking her beam with a roundoff full twist dismount and tumbling brilliantly on the floor.

JOY WILTON who performed consistently on all apparatus going clean on the beam and achieving a one and half twisting backaway on bars.

EVA NOBBS who was on fantastic form, performed the beam routine of her dreams, including her somi acro series for the first time in competition. Eva achieved the highest score on all the apparatus.

Rose Bowl International - October 2002

Yorkshire Team Win Bronze Medal
Grace Todd and Eva Nobbs were selected to represent Yorkshire in the Rose Bowl International Competition. Over 20 teams were entered, more than 100 gymnasts.

The girls had a very early start leaving Wetherby at 6:00am and arriving at the competition at 11:30am.

The venue was an old ice-rink converted into a fully equiped gym. Yorkshire only has one full competition floor in the whole region. This club has two!

The warm-up was complicated. The gymnasts warmed up on one set of apparatus and competed on another. This caused a big problem for the high level gymnasts. The warm-up apparatus varied greatly from the competiton apparatus. So what was the point of warming up? To get you stressed out?

Grace coped easily with the situation demonstrating her maturity. Eva quickly adapted her routines to cope.

Both girls gain valuable experience from this competiton. They perfomed well but with large errors.

Grace met her target by being the first gymnast from Wetherby to perform a giant with full pirouette.

Eva had a positive bad competiton!
Warren concluded "everything that could go wrong did go wrong for Eva today. But, I am delighted that she coped mentally and met her target - to catch the Jaeger on bars.

Despite the errors made by all the girls in the Yorkshire team. They still scored higher than South Durham, Pipers Vale, London, Libourne - France..........

The team placed third. Finally, Yorkshire can target higher than not coming last!

Yorkshire Team Competition - 6th October 2002

Every Wetherby Gymnast Won A Medal

The U9 team consisted of

Pascale Woods who represented Wetherby for the first time. Pascale coped very well with the occasion. She performed her first handspring vault and squat-on to the high bar.

Nicole Hinds who showed excellent maturity after a freaky fall from the bars. Nicole pulled herself together to perform 2 solid routines and her best vault ever.

Megan Alikhanizadeh performed strong upstarts on bars and a clean floor routine.

Holly Chana had a very positive competition. She also performed strong upstarts. Showing excellent competition temperament on the beam sticking her free roll.

Laura Mottershead was the high flyer of the team. Laura had huge difficulty in all of her routines. Despite performing all her elements cleanly the judges did not reward her with appropriate scores. One judge was heard to say, "that routine was in a league of its own. I just don't know where to start!"

The team was awarded second place. Just 0.4 behind City Of Leeds. But, remember 4 of the 5 Wetherby gymnasts were U8 and will be in the same team next year. All the Leeds gymnasts were 9 years old this was a significant advantage.

Wetherby U11 - Yorkshire Team Champions

Phillipa Moore performed a newly learned Jump Full Turn Upstart mount on bars and stuck her beam routine.

Rebecca Riley had a bad day on both the bars and the beam. But, held herself together to perform a good floor exercise with two somersault tumbles.

Holly Ellis had a very positive competition. She performed all 4 pieces of apparatus without even a small error. Sticking her flic on beam overcome her recent injury on this move. Well Done.

Rebecca Townsend fell twice from the beam which is most unlike our "Cool Cucumber!". She did perform well on the other pieces particularly on the floor with a two somersault tumble routine.

Grace Todd was the high flyer of this team. Sticking a side somi (D-value element)on the beam .Performing an excellent tucked Tsukahara vault. The youngest gymnast in Yorkshire to compete a somersault vault successfully.

A brillient team effort. Congratulations.

U13
Wetherby had two teams in this competition. Team A came second to a strong Greenhead team.

In Team A was Lauren Bruce who stuck her beam routine and performed the best floor routine she has ever done. Lauren also did her first Handspring Full Twist vault in competition.

Louise Crawford tried out some of the moves for her grade 4 competition and gain valuable experience.

Abigail Hatfield performed her first Mo Shoot on the bars (C-value element).

Charlotte Rutherford finally stood her straight backaway bar dismount, well done. She then went onto perform a fantastic floor routine achieving the highest score in her age-group. With a front somi walkout and a full twist to finish on.

Team B came third and the team members were Chloe Rowbottom who did well on the floor with a good tuck somi.

Lucy Wells performed a two tumble run floor routine with a tuck and a straight somersault.

Melissa Korn who has made massive strides forward by performing her first giants in competition. Simply brillient! She also performed a well landed Arabien tumble on the floor.

Well done U13's.

Wetherby Seniors - Yorkshire Team Champions 5 Years In A Row!
Wetherby had two teams entered in this age group.

Wetherby B place third and consisted of Rebecca Steele who performed well. Achieving high scores on both Floor and Vault.

Claire Stang performed excellent bars with a short clear to handstand and a Mo Shoot. Claire is waiting for an operation to repair her ACL in her Knee and so did not perform on Floor or Vault.

Helen Bolton only trains part time at Wetherby due to her attendance at Huddersfield University but still manages to perform solid routines on all apparatus.

Joy Wilton and Eva Nobbs made up Team A knocking Greenheads top team into second place by a very convincing 4 whole marks. Both gymnasts performed flawlessly on beam and bars. Joy performed an excellent Tsuki vault despite tha appalling matting. Eva performed basic routines not wanting to risk injury before the Camberley Invitational in 2 weeks time.

Yes, Wetherby Seniors are unbeatable!

National Age-Group Championships - November 2002

Laura & Grace Make Wetherby Proud

Laura Mottershead had a fantastic competition in Level 4. Performing very cleanly on all apparatus to come THIRD in GREAT BRITAIN. Wow!

History In The Making!
