Triathlon Training Weekend
York based White Rose Triathletes held their first training weekend on 15-16 July 2000. Aimed specifically at novice and intermediate athletes the event was a success for organisers and participants with 18 athletes showing an interest, most of who have subsequently joined the club.
Assistance for the weekend was obtained from the British Triathlon Association (BTA), who supplied "Do Tri" training packs, to supplement the teaching and coaching modules of the weekend. All aspects of the sport were covered with demonstrations and coaching in the pool, on the bike and out running. Other modules included hydration / nutrition, training levels, transition training, the rules of the sport, the advantages of club membership and the role of the BTA.
The main emphasis of the weekend was athlete involvement and participation with "death by lecture" being kept to an absolute minimum. As an added incentive to put training into practice contact was made with the organiser of Ilkley Triathlon to facilitate enrty for our trainees and offer an event for them as a target for their training. Other events will be targeted in coming months.
The training weekend was run "at cost" with club members drawing on over ten years experience of Triathlon and longer experience of the constituent sports, to provide the coaching as well as providing back up which included paperwork, refreshments and loan of equipment. a coaching staff of five presented the event but other club members contributed time and equipment and helped towards the build up which made the event work.
As a result of the weekend the club attracted several new members.
I would like to welcome all the new club members into White Rose Triathletes and hope they gain as much enjoyment as I do from the sport of Triathlon.
White Rose Triathletes are currently seeking new members and would welcome anybody to any of our training sessions, (check the main index for training sessions). |
