Entertainment !
Newly-promoted Nestle Rowntree Brass Band gained a highly creditable 3rd place in Malton Entertainment Contest held on Sunday 4th November. Under their Musical Director Billy Rushworth they played a short programme of their own choice starting with the fanfare from Carmina Birana. The President - a favourite contest march and featured by the band in their Whit Friday March contest appearances - followed. Solo Euphonium Mike Pratt excelled with his rendition of Napoli and the Band completed its performance on stage with a stirring arrangment of music from the soundtrack to the film Titanic.
A majestic performance !
You don't have to travel to West Yorkshire to hear traditional brass band music at its best. Remember York has its own Championship Section Band - the Nestle Rowntree Band. |
Brassed Off ? Not on your life !
The Nestle Rowntree Band took time out to take part in the Annual Whit Friday Marches at Saddleworth. Bands from all over the country take part in this traditional brass band event that was immortalised in the film Brassed Off. Not that any band drinks (or plays) like the Grimley Colliery Band on film !
Playing "Army of the Nile" the Band marched through 7 villages and towns around the Saddleworth area, before performing "The President" to appreciative audiences (and judges). They opened proceedings in Delph, being the first of more than 100 Bands to arrive in the area. Later on they followed the likes of Brighouse and Rastrick and Besses O' the Barn through wind and rain. But it was the cold that rather spoilt things for the 2002 contest.
Never mind - there's always next year to look forward to !
Highlight of the Band's performances must surely have been their 7th place in Lydgate (out of 49 Bands playing) and 11th place in Lees ahead of Besses who came 14th.
Thanks to all the Band's supporters who came along and to Eddie Brown's Coaches and their patient, helpful driver.

Going out on a high note
Mark Durham collected all the trophies as the Rowntree-Nestle Brass Band swept the board at this year's Hardraw Scar Contest.
Best Hymn .... Best March .... Best Band ... Best Conductor !!!
Playing the Autralasian, Deep Harmony and Dvorak's Carnival, the Band withstood the threat of rain to deliver just reward for its outstanding efforts of late.
Mark leaves York shortly for the bright lights of Newcastle where he will be studying Naval Architecture, so what a way to finish his stint as the Band's Principal Cornet player. Leading the Band through some of its most dramatic times in its 99 year history was no mean achievement and the Band owes Mark a debt of gratitude for his unswerving support. We wish him well in his future endeavours.

Success in Regional Finals
The Band gained a well-earned result at Darlington's Dolphin Centre on Sunday, March 16th with a 5th place spot that keeps them in the top section for another year. Beating rivals Harrogate and Greggs, the Band missed out on the trophies by 1 point but gained the satisfaction of knowing that they've made HUGE progress under MD Billy Rushworth.
The test piece - Prague - will go do in the annals of brass band music as one of the most widely criticised choices but Nestle-Rowntree rose to the challenge and met it full on. The adjudicators remarks singled out praise for the Band's soloists. The Band's "new" soprano player - Mark Durham - its former principal cornet player marked (sorry) out a new career for himself with a fine solo.
Watch out for the Band's Centenary Concert on Wesnesday May 28th in the Theatre Royal ! |
