Formed 26 years ago, the society made up entirely of volunteers aims to promote and encourage the fastest growing and most fascinating of hobbies .. namely Family History research.
We have a growing membership currently in excess of 700.
It's worth pointing out, at this stage that you don't just have to be researching York ancestors to find benefit of joining our society. Wherever you are researching in the UK, we can point you in the right direction
We hold meetings on the first Wednesday of every month (exc Aug) at the Priory Centre, Priory Street in York at 7.30pm. At these, we have a guest speaker and you will also find a whole host of information and resources to help you in your quest to find out about your roots. Our meetings are open to the general public and the first three visits are free !!
The society is involved in many projects making resources available and accessible to the general public. These include the indexing of the 1851 and 1891 census', the recording of burials and memorial inscriptions for regional parishes (which also includes the whole of York Cemetery). Copies of these transcriptions are available for purchase at our meetings.
This just scratches the surface of what we do and what we have available. Come and see us, get in touch or visit our web-site to find out more.
Researching your family history is great fun, full of surprises and highly addictive... good luck !!
