WELCOME to the YORK RAMBLERS
Would you like to enjoy the countryside with your local Ramblers group? What better way is there to get to know your own area than to walk in the local countryside? If you are a walker already, you will know that there is nothing more pleasant than getting out into the fresh air, relaxing and looking at the ever-changing countryside around you. So if you enjoy walking or want to take it up, why not join the Ramblers? We work hard to make the countryside a better place to walk in; we improve footpaths and we campaign for more access to open country. There is a local group near you, which organises programmes of walks and keeps an eye on what is happening in the local countryside.
The York Group works together with other local Ramblers groups in the East Yorkshire & Derwent Area (namely: Beverley, Driffield, Howden & Goole, Hull, Pocklington, Ryedale and Scarborough) to organise a variety of full and half-day rambles in these areas, on most Sundays, Wednesdays and Saturdays throughout the year. We have develop a series of walks using public transport and there is also a programme of shorter evening walks during summer. Altogether, we hope this will give everyone a chance to enjoy the many miles of footpaths in the Vale of York as well as the chalk hills and dry valleys of the Wolds, the heather clad North York Moors and the splendours of the Yorkshire coast, and (to the West) the limestone Dales and millstone grit hills.
Some of our members inspect footpaths, try to get faults remedied, and blocked paths cleared. Volunteers to help in this work are always welcome.
Nationally, the Ramblers campaigns for greater access to the countryside for responsible walkers, as well as to keep open (or re-open) those rights of way which are already published on the Ordnance Survey maps. For news of current campaigns, e-mail access@ramblers.org.uk
If you are interested in joining, you are welcome to try one or two walks before deciding : further information can be obtained from the notice board upstairs in the City Library. The current month's walks are given on other pages of this website.
