EXPLORING LAKE PICKERING
In 1902 Percy Kendall described how a great lake existed in the Vale of Pickering during the Ice Age. Although modified since then, two lakes did exist in that area, and this book describes a 155 mile trail round the edges, broken up into 36 interlinked day circular walks. These walks include the Howardian and Tabular hills, as well as the Wolds and Coast, and the book contains a wealth of local information.
Cost : £9
Contact the author, John Eckersley at Heslington Vicarage, York YO10 5EE
He has also written Abbeys Amble (£7.99) (in the Dales)
Note also : The Whitby Way by Leslie Stanbridge (York to Whitby) (£6.00)
Both are available from 171 Burton Stone Lane, York YO30 6DG

The RA keeps encouraging its members to leave their cars at home and use public transport but then leaves you to get on and organise it and it’s often not as easy as it seems. Not everywhere is served by buses and trains, and when they are its not always at times or on days you want to go. A lot more advance planning has to be done. And there's still no guarantee they'll turn up when they say they will.
But putting those not insignificant objections to one side it’s often worth the effort and can take you places you wouldn't otherwise visit; and using Patsy Pendegrass's new but important book will cut out a lot of the hard work and give you a number of steps in the right direction.

‘Car Free Countryside Walks Accessible From York’ give 15 possible walks that can be enjoyed using some of the buses or trains services that pass through York. They are all round the city and of varying lengths from a short 3 miles upto a lengthy 12miles. 8 of the walks are linear, utilising public transport at either end and meaning you wouldn’t have to return to your car. Patsy has suggested times and routes of buses to use on each walk and has also listed details of each transport company if you need more information on a particular
day. Most of the buses/trains she uses run daily services and only 2 walks are dependant on the Moorsbus service and could only be done during Summer.

Although Patsy has provided full route descriptions, her maps are sketchy and you will need a proper OS map to follow and these are listed in the introduction.

All the walks are worth trying and could lead to other discoveries. So why not leave the car at home and give the bus or train a go?

It’s always nice to have someone else drive you home after a good walk. But can I reinforce Patsy’s request that you check all the times before you set out. You will also need to check the transport company as well as they change names (as well as their timetables) quite regularly.

Her book costs £4-99p and is available from local bookshops
or from Patsy herself (add 50p p&p) at 92 The Village, Haxby, York YO32 2JL. Profits from the sale of the book will be donated to the RA.
Also by Patsy is
'Short walks in and near Haxby and Wigginton - in the Vale of York`
The walks are in a very pleasant, flat area to the north of York. A few are semi urban walks but most are entirely in the countryside. The walks are indeed short - the shortest being 1.5 miles and the longest 5 miles.
The book is available from,
The Community Office
Oaken Grove
Haxby
York YO32 3QZ
Cost £5.00 or £5.50 if sent. Cheques payable to 'P.M. Pendegrass'. It is also on sale in Borders bookshop in York.
