DINNER

The Dinner / Dance was on 31 March 2007.

The venue was the Beechwood Close Hotel, Shipton Road, YORK. Some 72 members/guests enjoyed a good evening.
Presentation to John Ledgeway (Junior Cup) - President Ian Hotchkies won the Numbers Board prize.
David King was also presented with the Chairman's Trophy.
The speaker was Peter Walton, Select List Referee. He had travelled direct from a game at Charlton to York and provided us with an entertaining evening, with some stories about his career and travels (we never quite got the rendition of Neil Diamond's "Sweet Caroline" - he saved that for Conference!

See separate report on Centenary Dinner on 7 March 2008, in the Centenary section of the site.
Nealry 200 attended the event at York Racecourse to celebrate 100 years of York RA.

The next event is the Presentation and Disco evening at Ramada Hotel, Skelton on the 17 October 2008. Make a note in your diary now.

CRICKET

War of the Roses
York hosted lancaster referees on Sunday 22 July at Acomb CC. The 30 over match saw York win with Jan Suchecki being York's man of the match. York batted first and scored 154/6 after 30 overs. Lancaster replied strongly and looked set to achieve a winning score only to concede wickets and made 117.

This annual event is a good social occasion and maintains relationships with our colleagues from over the hill. We look forward to travelling to Lancaster next year.

The score currently stands in York's favour 9-3 (3 drawn).

QUIZ NIGHT
The annual quiz / buffet evening is held at the December meeting each year.

RA National Conference

Conference was held at Sollihull on 5 July 2008.
The 2008 Conference
saw a "The Future of Refereeing" as the theme, with Mike Riley and Steve Smith as Keynote speakers. Also Howard Webb made a presentation about his Euro 2008 experiences. Many workshops were held throughout the day - Mike Riley, Howard Webb, Steve Bennett, Martin Atkinson, Chris Foy to name a few.
Neale Barry also made a presentation of the Law changes which took all of 62 seconds!

It was a success and well supported by York.
Ian Hotchkies, Don Thorpe, David King, Anthony Thornton, Graham Bradbury and partners attended Solihull this year. Chris Simpson, Mark Dwyer and Paul Tomes attended on the Saturday, and John Ledgeway attended the Dinner.

The evening Dinner was the highlight with speeches by Geoff Thompson and Lord Triesman (FA) and by Pierluigi Collina plus David Elleray.
Other guests included Jack Taylor (1974 World Cup Final Referee) and John Motson, amongst many others.

The Friday evening was the highlight for me as I was awarded my Long and Meritorious Serivce Award by the RA (along with others including Colin Hart from N Riding).
York RA were also featured in the Conference brochure as we also celebrated our Centenary (as well as a number of other Socieities).

It was good to see a number of younger referees as well as some Premiership referees.

Why not consider attending Conference....it is free.
The National RA Conference in 2009....being held again at Solihull on 11 July 2009.
Why not attend the Saturday; you will enjoy it.

The next project is potentially a new ground for the club.

David Milburn, Rugby League Match Commissioner and local Football Referee gave us a insight into the code of Rugby League.

His father was a football referee but David got into Rugby Union when he lived in Hertfordshire. After moving to York (St Johns College) and getting ito teaching he then became involved with the League code.
He refereed in the professional game and is currently a Rugby League Delegate.

The one law he would bring into football from Rugby is the 10 yard rule.

Phil gave us some of his experiences and involved members in an interactive discussion.
Congratualtions go to Phil for his appointment to the Johnstone's Paint Trophy Final at Wembley on 30 March.

It was also pleasing to see David Kirk from Harrogate at our meeitng.
