York Railway Institute Band

The Band which is now known as the York Railway Institute Band was established in 1883 by the lay-preacher and choirmaster Noah Bruce. Since then the Band has had several names and homes but despite often-turbulent times and fortunes the Band remained extant and is in fact York's oldest Brass Band. An interesting fact is that during the whole of the Band’s long and distinguished history there has always been a Bruce in the Band - Noah was their first conductor followed by his son Laurie, who has in turn been succeeded by his son Ian who is currently playing in the Band and conducting our Youngsters’ Band Club.
The Band's current home is next to the Railway Station right in the centre of the City. We are very lucky to be able to enjoy the benefits of our own building and to have the excellent bar & sports facilities of the Railway Institute on site.
The YRIB was the first band in the area to achieve 'Championship Section' status, competing at the very highest level for many years. As with all organisations the Band’s fortunes have fluctuated and after a period of outstanding success the Band has survived a ‘lean’ period in its history thanks mainly to the return of Derek Warley as Musical Director. The Band is now competing in the Second Section nationally but is expecting to return to the First Section next year. (The Band is currently top of the Second Section in the Northern Area).
It is not only on the Contest platform that the Band excels but on the concert stage as well. The Band is in great demand for concerts and corporate functions, regularly appearing at the National Railway Museum here in York and at theatres and halls all over the UK. Recently the Band performed at the inaugural ‘Picnic Concert’ in the natural amphitheatre at the Kew (at Castle Howard) Arboretum, which will I am sure become one of the Band’s favourite, if unusual, venues.
Over the years many of the World’s finest Brass Band conductors have lifted the baton for the YRIB. Norman Hudson, Edmund Hoole, Ken Johnson, Lt. Col. Frank Renton and Peter Kitson to name but a few. Many outstanding players have started their careers at the ‘Institute’ and have gone on to play for the very best Bands and orchestras in the World. Training has always been the secret of the success of the ‘Institute Band’ from the beginners group on a Monday night, our training band and of course the 'Institute Band' itself.
